THE best golfers in the district will be out in full force next month when they take on the Carnival of Golf at Portarlington Golf Club.

Arguably one the biggest golfing weeks in Victoria, the Carnival of Golf will welcome about 1,000 golfers to the Bellarine to play for more than $15,000 worth of prizes.

The Community Bank Men’s 36-hole championship kicks off the golf week on August 25, with rising star Max Edmanson from Portarlington a local chance to be high on the leaderboard.

The Wettenhall’s Bellarine Ladies’ Open Championship at the carnival is now the only club-organised 27-hole competition available for women’s participation in the district.

“This unique and challenging event is an integral part of the ladies golfing calendar, so the club is hoping for plenty of ladies support to continue the tradition,” chief executive officer Ron Stockdale said.

“There are also the 18-hole and Irish 4-Ball events for ladies too.”

The carnival week has events that welcome all levels of golfers, and finishes on August 31 with the Bellarine Times Ambrose Event, with entries coming in very quickly already for that day.

“The success of the carnival is palpable, as the event marks its 21st year this year,” Mr Stockdale said.

“We must thank our major event sponsor Prestige Jayco, who have been with us since the event’s inception.

“This year we are also delighted to welcome aboard the Portarlington and Drysdale Community Bendigo Bank Branches as our other major naming rights sponsor.”

The event offers golfers a great opportunity to play on the award-winning Santa Ana course, which has been ranked in the top 100 courses in Australia for the last three years.

The Club’s Pro Am has also won Victorian Regional PGA Pro Am of the Year twice and is a finalist again this year.

Mr Stockdale said if you did not manage to pick up a place in one of the 10 golfing events, there was the exciting prospect of winning three night’s accommodation on Hamilton Island by entering the daily raffles.

“Clubhouse operations are in full swing during the week, with the carvery on Wednesday and wine tasting on the Friday night to mark the end of the carnival week.”.

Portarlington Golf Club looks forward to welcoming golfers with the club’s renowned hospitality to this impressive event on the Bellarine.
