After participating in a special music workshop, aspiring young performers took to the stage during Shebang! – a youth concert held in Torquay at the weekend. Danish band and international headliners Forever Unclean put on a show for the crowd, aged between 12-25, at Quicksilver Boardriders Bar 61 on May 12. Melbourne rockers The Sinking Teeth also played, along with Torquay-based outfits Alaia, De Porsal and Neuritis. The drug, smoke and alcohol-free concert organised by Surf Coast Youth and FReeZA youth committee, followed a successful inaugural Shebang! held last year. The event is supported by funding from the state government FReeZA program with committee members eager to hold the encore event at an established live music venue. The workshop held earlier in the day for young performers enabled 22 participants to absorb practical industry advice and insight. Led by members of The Sinking Teeth, discussions focused on areas including: establishing a clear sound; making sure the expectations of band members align; dealing with record labels, booking agents and publicists; and, networking, booking tours and self-promotion.
